Overview Lost is an independent magazine aimed at a younger audience of people in their 20’s who have an interest in hiking. It’s about making hiking cool again, putting a creative twist on imagery found within nature. I chose ‘Lost’ as the magazine title as I thought it encapsulated the nature of the magazine perfectly, from straying from a trail and getting lost, to getting lost in the imagery within the magazine. Typography I wanted to the body text to compliment the heading and for the headings to hold the majority of the personality. I wanted my spreads to have a calming feeling that focused on the imagery and the positioning of the type, rather than the typeface itself drawing all of the viewers attention. The type-setting has also been carefully considered, using horizontal text to symbolise the unpredictability of nature. Having type set vertically and horizontally also guides the reader on a journey through the way that they read the page, similar to the way people walk. Imagery I chose to take all of the images myself as I really wanted to capture the essence of what I feel like it is to hike, to be one with nature. I also wanted to ensure that the photos were taken on film as I wanted the analogue nature of being outside to be reflected in the equipment that I took the photographs with. The use of the glitches in the imagery, symbolise being lost within nature and combines the virtual world that the youth now live in, with the real world. Repeated imagery is also used to convey this same messaging. The die-cuts used for the listings represent the ever-changing essence of nature and the shape of the die-cuts represent the rigid shape of a pixel. Due to the nature of some of the articles written, I had chosen to use blurred imagery so the reader is able to use their imagination through the descriptive writing, rather than it being explicitly shown.
