Overview Artist-Filmmaker Peter Treherne is working on ‘Matter of Britain’, a feature film (with a mix of some documentary footage) about the search for the Holy Grail based in a Sussex village. To separate each chapter of the film, title and intertitle cards bound into a book are needed. These cards had to reflect 17th century book design and had to have enough margin space to allow the narrator to turn the pages without their hands getting in the shot. The client was keen on avoiding digital text, so we knew we had to find ways of hand printing copious amounts of text without it being too time-consuming. We also knew we had to find paper with a certain texture that would allow the cards to have a more authentic feel and create interesting textures with the printing ink that avoids a digitally printed look. This was a really interesting project as we had to do the production ourselves. We had a cost estimate which we had to get approved before starting production as we had to get the polymer plates made before we could print with them. The biggest challenge we came across with production was that we had to take multiple prints of some of the pages as they were printing unevenly. Our technician, Geoff helped us when we had some plates that weren’t printing evenly, so we put thin layers off paper under the side that was printing more faintly so that the plate would even out.
